Screening Workshop

Based off of key terms, me and my partner selected a set of words (character, plot, conflict, resolution, structure, scenes, senses, dialogue and visuals) which were linked to the film. From this we chose a set of words which we both decided summed the different characteristics of the film, these were;
  • Ambiguous
  • Stuck
  • Long panning shots
  • Focus on audio
  • Evolution
  • Human vs AI
  • Utopian
We decided to take the theme of a Utopian setting/destination forward. This was based on the idea of the space station they're travelling on being designed as a craft which has everything you could want on it. It was also based on the idea that they are travelling to a utopian planet which they will be able to inhabit.

From this we designed a screening which would replicate the setting of the cockpit of a space craft, where you would have to crawl in and out of the space to make it feel more immersive. This would also include a set of emergency instructions for the audience to follow; this would incorporate the utopian theme through the futuristic stylised interior.

We felt this idea was too vague so we instead focussed on a more specific element to the screening, and decided to design a ticket for the journey they will be following through space. The ticket would be based on the utopian themes concurrent throughout the film, and would be stylised in a clean futuristic form. Our first draft included all the information you would usually see on a regular plane ticket, but altered using information from the film (i.e. running time), the ticket would also include a name tag of the 'astronaut' in the screening.

The second draft was on card and included barcodes and a logo I designed based off space travel, this made the ticket feel more personal to the screening and gave it a more authentic look.
Our rationale for the ticket was, 'we are creating a ticket for the discovery one space flight, to continue the theme of a utopian setting/destination'.

We then decided to take this digital and create a form which was clearer so that we could get a better idea of how we wanted to structure our ticket.

Our next draft merged the idea of a black electronic ticket from one of the other pairs and ours, derived from the black monolith in the film. We decided to print on the black card and had alternative versions printed in black and white. These tickets would have a section you can rip off the end of the ticket.

On the back of these tickets, where you tear the ticket off will have a section where the audience can review the screening and will be asked 'how they can make the make the screening perfect'; following the theme of a utopian space.

From the whole group critique we discussed how the information could potentially be used as an agony aunt section in a zine. But then decided against this a decided to go with the idea of a ballet box which they would drop their response to screening into.

Another idea from the crit  was an animation of the A.I. Hal orders people where to sit. etc.
Crit - making code and getting people to get it could be a risk and not as effective as we want. Hal projection getting people to sit down in certain places could take too long, adding even more time onto an already long film.

Another idea from the crit was to use multiple projectors to display the film. And that the computer malfunctions as people come in. There would be two screens, one the film and one malfunction of both the film. Old TV displaying hal, welcoming people?
Crit - makes film more immersive

Rationale for our Ideas:

Using multiple projectors to screen 2001 a space odyssey, one showing the film in its entirety. One showing imagery form the film. More specifically the “Computer Malfunction” screen monitor from the film. Or alternatively, using a small analogue TV set placed below the projection to show the “computer Malfunction” scene. The audience will be given a ticket upon entrance, which they will fill out after watch the film.

Positives and negatives of idea from critique:

Tom: ticket ideas - based on the idea of of taking a setting from the film - the ‘discovery one’. Based on the idea of being clean and futuristic, a utopian setting. Back of the ticket would have questions on how they make the screening ‘perfect’. Links to Utopianism. Turn answers into a zine. A response to the screening, a reflection.

- The idea of feedback within the tickets is a good idea. Though doesn’t necessarily need to be a zine.
- Utopian - links to futuristic element of the film, but the films plot points aren’t about utopianism.

The logo was inspired by the form of a rocket, it was also inspired by the 'unknown' alien aspect of the film.

Ruby: Create an electronic zine - which can be downloaded while watching the film. Playing with the idea of using HAL to dictate the placement of people at the screening. Use light to show people where to go. Random Generator.

Positives: links to the idea of the characters within 2001 a space odyssey.
Negative: hard to create to a functional level.
Why is the zine needed? - zine could include ticket (my idea). It was just the idea to download something, link to technology. Could use a QR ticket to shut down phones, linking to HAL malfunction. Downloadable tickets.

Louis and Ewan: Using multiple projectors to screen 2001 a space odyssey, one showing the film in its entirety. One showing imagery form the film. More specifically the “Computer Malfunction” screen monitor from the film. Or alternatively, using a small analogue TV set placed below the projection to show the “computer Malfunction” scene.

Positives: simple but effective, immersive experience. Implements other peoples ideas as well.
negatives: have to work out the logistics of screening in the corner of the room.

Phoebe and Evie: Using the obelisk as a design motif to implement into a ticket design. Displaying ticket information on black ink on black, thick, card.
